STARRY EYED AGAIN (CHET ON OUR MINDS)

Michela Lombardi has a contralto instrument that might clear the cobwebs out of rafters within 500 or wherever she stations herself to sing, and yet she is able to damp it down, so she can read a lyrics with intelligence and a sense of intimacy. This time out (11/04, p.119) she’s had the good fortune to align herself with a pianist whose introspective melodicism keeps her in check, without imposing strict limits on her natural expressiveness. They work together beautifully in duet mode on five of these tracks (“Everything Happens To Me”/”All The Way”/”You Go To My Head”/”I’ve Never Been In Love Before”/”I’m A Fool To Want You”), and in each instance Riccardo Arrighini allows her ample space in which to weave improvisational enhancements to the existing melodic line. Michela’s reading of “I’m A Fool To Want You” is so personal it might embarrass even Oprah. Even though her scatting might best be heard as a work in progress, she has written inventive vocalese lyrics for “Look For The Silver Lining” and “It Could Happen To You” and injects them into these tunes with no seams showing. Her out of tempo a cappella use of the verse for “I Fall In Love Too Easily” is worth hearing over and over, as is her reading of “My Funny Valentine” in which she catches the lyric’s playful ironics, missed by all those singers who choose to treat the song with the odic solemnity as if they were singing to a statue. The trio is rounded out by bassist Paolo Benedettini and drummer Alessandro Minetto, both of whom know subtlety when they play it. The subtitle of the set is “Chet On Our Minds” and the hook is that the repertoire is drawn from songs the trumpeter/singer made good use of either instrumentally or vocally or both, during his troubled Jazz sojourn (1958-88) on our planet. Michela Lombardi has returned Chet’s favour by making her own exquisite use of them.

Questa volta (quanto all’altra, si veda Cadence n.11 – 2004) ha avuto la fortuna di stare al fianco di un pianista il cui introspettivo senso della melodia la tiene ben d’occhio, senza imporre limiti stringenti alla sua naturale espressività. Lavorano insieme in duo splendidamente su cinque tracce (Everything Happens To Me, All The Way, You Go To My Head, I’ve Never Been In Love Before, I’m A Fool To Want You) e in ognuna Riccardo Arrighini le consente ampio spazio in cui tessere abbellimenti alla linea melodica esistente. La versione di Michela di I’m A Fool To Want You è talmente personale che potrebbe imbarazzare persino Oprah [Winfrey, ndt]. Sebbene il suo scat sia da intendere come un work in progress, ha scritto vocalese lyrics ricche d’inventiva per Look For The Silver Lining e It Could Happen To You, e le proietta in quei brani senza far avvertire alcun segno di cucitura. La versione a cappella e “rubato” che fa del verse di I Fall In Love Too Easily val bene più ascolti ripetuti, così come la sua rilettura di My Funny Valentine, in cui coglie la giocosa ironia del testo, cosa che non riesce a tutti quei cantanti che scelgono di trattare tale brano con solennità epica come se stessero cantando ad una statua. Il trio è completato da Paolo Benedettini al contrabbasso e Alessandro Minetto alla batteria, ognuno dei quali sa con finezza come e quando suonare. Il sottotitolo è «Chet On Our Minds» [Chet nei nostri pensieri, ndt] e il motivo dominante è che il repertorio è tratto dalle canzoni di cui il trombettista-cantante fece buon uso sia strumentalmente che vocalmente, durante il suo tormentato viaggio jazz sul nostro pianeta. Michela Lombardi ha ricambiato la cortesia facendone un uso personale e squisito.
